More and more people who take vitamins are being drawn to one or more of the liquid vitamin supplements that have been coming onto the market. This is especially true among older people or those who have trouble swallowing many of the large vitamin pills that manufacturers typically pack into their containers.

For many years now, the most popular means of taking vitamins has been via pill or capsule form. There are several reasons for this. From the consumer’s standpoint, nothing could be easier or more convenient than simply taking one or more capsules and swallowing them with water or their choice of beverage. In addition, they are easy to carry around. So, if you want to take your vitamins at midday or in the afternoon, it’s not problem at all to simply carry some in your purse or pocket.

Liquid Vitamins vs. pill form has only recently become a valid question with the advent of natural botanical nutraceutical products that are entering the market place. There are any number of reasons why a consumer would pick either but I believe that the three most important considerations in this decision are cost, quality, and absorption effectiveness. Quality for me is always at the top of the list so let’s discuss this characteristic first.

From a quality standpoint concerning liquid vitamins vs. pill vitamins the winner in this arena is “liquid vitamins”. Vitamins in pill form, to preserve the nutrients for shelf life, must be dried in a way that requires heating which is often times detrimental to the preservation of nutrients. The heating process is always a challenging aspect of preserving nutrients for shelf life of nutritional supplements. In 2000 I attended a conference where a keynote speech was given by the economist Paul Zane Pilzer who was giving a speech on the soon to be trillion dollar wellness industry. In his speech he cited the dismal quality record of vitamin manufactures with only 6 of the top 18 companies actually providing the nutrients that they claim on their packaging. These vitamin producers are rated by the NSF and 2/3 of the top 18 failed to measure up. The reasons for this are many but, most importantly, is the fact that pill vitamins, at this point in time, rule the marketplace.

Why shouldn’t be eating everything from supplements instead of whole foods? Is there research on this?

I have a healthy 9 month old, male, pit bull who weighs a 51 pounds. He’s healthy, but tends to skip his food every here and there so we give him vitamins to make sure he’s gets everything he needs.

Ever since he was 8 weeks old, we have given him 1 tablet of this vitamin everyday

However, now that we are out of that vitamin and my dog weighs 5 times more than he was at 8 weeks, I was wondering if I should switch him to this vitamin
