Dogs are just like humans, almost. Their physiological make up is very similiar to our own. They get dehydrated just like we do during activity. Same process for you when you exert yourself. Always supply fresh water and solid nutrition. You won’t go wrong. I know because I am a vet tech of 7 years and have a degree in veterinary sciences. I also have 3 very active dogs of my own. Think of them as very hairy children and act accordingly.
For intense exercises (racing, hunting etc.) additional vitamin E and selenium are needed to support the oxygen and iron requirement. And ofcourse enough fat, protein and carbonhydrates to support the energy requirements.
